Abstract
We have examined whether or not it would be possible to obtain a giant spontaneous polarization in BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films, in agreement to our experimental data showing values of nearly 150 C/cm2. As our previous calculations have shown such values can only be obtained in a giant tetragonality structure of a perfect crystal, in this paper we are studying the defects' influence on the spontaneous polarization in a structure with a low tetragonality. We have found that, alike in conventional perovskite ferroelectrics such as BaTiO3 and PbTiO3, hole doping can enhance the ionic off-centering in BFO.
