Abstract

A supersaturated NiTi(Al) alloy powder was produced from NiTi and Al powders by solid-state synthesis utilizing high-energy mechanical alloying with times up to 8 h. The microstructure and phase composition of the milling products were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The results indicated that the diffraction lines corresponding to B2-NiTi shift toward higher angles with increasing milling time, which means that the lattice parameter of NiTi decreases and NiTi(Al) solid solution is formed. Further investigations showed that the lattice parameter of NiTi reaches a constant value after 8 h of milling, indicating that alloying of NiTi and Al is completed.
