Abstract
The composition of a drawing by Nicolaes Berchem in the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York shows such strong resemblances with a drawing by Berchem in the Amsterdams Historisch Museum, that it is plausible that these drawings were intended as designs for two pendant paintings. The Amsterdam drawing has not been mentioned by Felice Stamp-f le in the catalogue (fig. 1) of the exhibition Rubens and Rembrandt in their century, Flemish and Dutch drawings of the 17th century from the Pierpont Morgan Library, 1979/80 (no. 100). In this catalogue (no. 101) Miss Stampfle refers to three drawings by Berchem which served as designs for a series of four etchings by Jan de Visscher, entitled Diversa Animalia Quadrupedia. The fourth drawing is in the collection of the Amsterdams Historisch Museum (fig. 2). The pedigree of the four drawings is provided in this article.
