Abstract

Of many treatments tried in an attempt to get larvae of H. goettingiana to hatch in vitro, only soaking cysts in calcium hypochlorite solution was effective, giving a 30% hatch. Comparing the behaviour of populations of H. goettingiana and H. rostochiensis in field plots with host and nonhost crops, and in fallow soil, showed that H. goettingiana, like H, rostochiensis, is stimulated to hatch by a host crop. A larger proportion of hatched larvae of H. goettingiana entered host roots than those of H. rostochiensis.
