Abstract

Several authors have observed that the olive fruit fly, Dacus oleae (Gmelin), may exhibit polygamic behavior when confined in cages, with individuals of both sexes mating more, than once in their lifetimes (Sacantanis 1953, Moore l960, Hagen et al. 1963, Nicolopoulos 1963). The work reported here was directed toward discovering how long females of this species, under caged conditions indoors, can continue to lay fertile eggs after they are separated from the males.
