Abstract

Glanded (Gl) and glandless (gl) isolines of Acala 4–42–77 cotton, differing in the presence and absence of epidermal glands containing allelochemicals, were compared for ovipositional preference by Lygus hesperus Knight (Hemiptera: Miridae). No statistical difference was found in the number of eggs laid on Gl or gl cottons. Both no-choice and free-choice tests showed nearly identical results. L. hesperus preferred to oviposit on the leaf, which contained 68 to 97% of all eggs deposited. The leaf petiole, particularly the pulvinus, contained 64 to 80% of all eggs deposited. The apical third of the plant contained significantly more eggs than did the lower portions.
