Abstract

Larvae of Toxorhynchites amboinensis (Doleschall) are attracted to live Aedes aegypti (L.) larvae but not to dead A. aegypti larvae. The degree of attraction of T. amboinensis larvae is unaffected by their age but prior starvation of the predator increases this attraction and is directly correlated with the amounts of A. aegypti larvae used. The attractant is present in aqueous extracts of A. aegypti larvae and also in the water in which A. aegypti larvae have been reared. Thus, prey location in T. amboinensis is, in part at least, a result of chemoattraction.
