Abstract
In this paper, we report on a stock of the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), that has produced a significant excess of females for >3 yr of laboratory culture. Reciprocal crosses indicate that the basis of the female bias segregates with the males. In cerebral ganglion mitotic chromosomes, figures highly suggestive of a translocation involving three chromosomes were observed. Mitotic figures with chromosome bridges at anaphase suggest a model to explain the sex ratio distortion.
