Abstract
The Central American scarab genus Platyrutela is reviewed, a new species from northeastern Costa Rica is described, and larvae of both species in the genus are described. The genus Platyrutela includes 2 pecies: P. cribrata Bates from the Pacific coastal habitats of Costa Rica and Guatemala, and P. arenicola, new species, from Caribbean coastal habitats of Costa Rica. Third instars of both species also are described and the unusual arenicolous adaptations of these white grubs are discussed briefly. Diagnostic structures of adults and larvae are included.
