Abstract

Charles Valentine Riley, mme than any of the founding American entomologists of the latter half of the nineteenth century, established the standards for the publications of the emerging discipline of entomology. There were three noteworthy features of his journalistic endeavors. First, he viewed publications as the cohesive link that held the struggling community of entomologists together. Second, he wrote in the popular vein that had helped popularize entomology in the English Victorian setting of his childhood. Third, he used illustrations profusely as essential components in teaching entomology. The present report focuses on his art training in Bonn as a factor in his use of illustrations during the course of his career.
