Suppression of phenol and defense related enzymes in cowpea seed by seed-borne fungi

Abstract

Cowpea seed samples collected from different parts of Tamil Nadu showed the seed-borne infection of Macrophomina phaseolina,Fusarium oxysporum f.sp.tracheiphilum,Alternaria alternata, Curvularia lunata,Aspergillus flavus,A.niger,Rhizopus stolonifer and Penicillium sp.Seeds inoculated with M.phaseolina,F.oxysporum f.sp.tracheiphilum,A.flavus and A.niger had higher total phenol contents as compared to control seeds and the concentrations recorded an uptrend up to 20 days of storage after inoculation and thereafter started declining.The activities of peroxidase,polyphenol oxidase and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase were higher in inoculated seeds with respect to control but as the days of storage after inoculation increased the enzyme activities decreased.
