Abstract

Interactions between the immune and nervous systems are critical for maintenance and adaptive responses of the nervous system to various types of environmental perturbations including infection, physical injury, and neurodegenerative disease. Recent research suggests critical roles for T-lymphocytes and the signaling molecules they produce in responses of the nervous system to adversity. The roles of T-cells in such responses are complex and in some cases, detrimental, whereas at other times they are important for recovery. In this special issue of NeuroMolecular Medicine, leaders in the field of T-lymphocyte functions in neural injury and repair review a range of topics in this exciting field.
