Abstract

The relation of weights of crown foliage and branchwood to other tree measurements has been established for shortleaf pine in the Missouri Ozarks. Stand density apparently has no effect. Bole diameter at the base of the crown was the best single estimator of foliage and branchwood weights. Diameter at breast height or crown length were poor estimators when used alone. However, diameter breast height and crown ratio can be used in combination with small error. Adjustments are necessary in estimating weights of irregular crowns. Also, prediction equations presented here have been developed for the dormant season. Weights must be corrected for seasonal differences if needed for other periods. Procedures for minimizing these sources of errors are suggested. Weight of crown components can be estimated using tables presented.
