Abstract

A one-percent solution of alginate was applied during late summer to bare-rooted loblolly pine seedlings (1-0) as a root dip before planting in pots. No mortality occurred in alginate-treated seedlings after a period of water stress caused complete stomatal closure. The treatment increased seedling water content and slowed stomatal closure. Tolerance to desiccation was increased from 1 to 5 days by the alginate treatment. Forest Sci. 20:192-194.
