Abstract
This paper presents a direct method, easier than that developed by Matthews (1942), to determine optimum road spacing and optimum landing spacing that will minimize timber harvest cost. A comparison of the two methods shows Matthews' method gives slightly inaccurate results when landing costs are significant. A necessary condition for minimum cost is that variable yarding costs equal road costs plus twice the landing costs. Forest Sci. 24:209-217.
