Abstract
Effect of storage temperatures on seed moisture and viability in Shorea spp. has been studied. Mature seeds were harvested and stored at 33°-36°C, 23.5°C, 13.5°C, and 5°C for 0 to 105 days. Seeds from each storage temperature were studied for the moisture loss during storage as well as germinability at different time intervals. While the seeds stored at room temperature (33°-36°C) lost their viability within 11 days, the viability was prolonged at temperatures of 13.5° and 23.5°C. The rapid loss in seed moisture at higher (33°-36°C) and near freezing (5°C) temperatures seems to be the primary cause of loss in viability. Forest Sci. 28:526-530.
