Abstract

Sir Herbert Howard, who contributes this article, was Inspector General of Forests to the government of India during most of the war years from 1940 to 1945. He therefore served in the Indian Forest Service almost till partition in 1947. An account of what had been done by the service, some idea of its aims, the condition of the forest estate it handed over, and some indication of the future forest policy of the government of India as envisaged by that service is of special significance at this moment. The creation of the two new dominions marks the end of a period in the history of Indian forestry and the dawn of a new era. A short article cannot do justice to the subject. There is room for a fourth volume of Stebbing's The Forests of India carrying on the history from 1925, at which date the third volume ends, up to 1947.
