Abstract
A test of cruising methods has indicated that 3P cruising is superior to the standard method for cruising ponderosa pine on selectively cut national forest timber sales in the Pacific Northwest. The 3P estimates of total sale volume and total sale value were notably free of sampling error, whether or not an optical dendrometer was used to measure the sample trees. They appeared to be less exposed to bias if the dendrometer was used. If this experience is typical, estimates of total sale value under 3P cruising may be sufficiently accurate to justify selling on the cruise instead of on the scale.
