Abstract
Centuries of unregulated use severely depleted forest resources of Turkey, but nationalization of forests after founding of the Republic of Turkey in 1923 marked the beginning of orderly management. Forestry achievements since then include creation of a competent administration, completion of a nationwide inventory, reforestation of nearly 1 million acres, establishment of nurseries with a capacity of 500 million seedlings annually, construction of 36,000 miles of roads, development of an effective fire-fighting organization, and creation of facilities for research and for training of professionals and technicians.
