Abstract

Forestry in the German Democratic Republic is almost entirely government controlled and operated. Management is intensive, and even-aged systems and artificial regeneration prevail. Coniferous species predominate, with Scotch pine making up more than half of the country's forest acreage. The need for steadily increased productivity is the foremost challenge.
