Abstract
This article first considers the craftsman model as it applies to current writing methods. Next, it looks at how effective design and development in a single-sourcing environment conflict with the craftsman model. Then, as a way of avoiding those conflicts and meeting the call for specialization, it examines the technical communication career path and how it may require redefining the junior and senior writer. Finally, it considers some implications of those career path changes. By distinguishing clear roles for junior and senior technical communicators, with most of the specialization occurring at the senior level, the profession can both encourage professional development and raise overall professional status within organizations.
