Abstract
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common and disabling condition affecting many more people than previously thought. This paper reviews the research into several aspects of the disorder including epidemiology, demographics and diagnosis. Changes in classification due to improved understanding of the disorder are discussed. It goes on to concentrate on how OCD presents in adults, paying particular attention to what clinicians are likely to encounter in their daily practice. The effects of OCD on both patient and relatives and the resulting implications for treatment are explored in detail. The typical course of OCD is described and the overlap with many of the anxiety disorders is highlighted.
