Description
The study examines medieval legal text traditions in the South of France and the Iberian peninsula. It is able to demonstrate that one of the major impulses in the evolution of an elaborate code for written Romance-language texts in the 12th and 13th centuries was the renaissance of Roman law originating in Bologna. The demonstration takes place from two perspectives, one diachronic, the other synchronic. The diachronic approach inquires into the way legal discourse traditions, characterized here in textual, linguistic, and content terms, find their way into certain areas and languages. The synchronic approach identifies co-existing traditions and examines their relationship to one another.
