First Records of Trypetesa and Megalasma (Crustacea: Cirripedia) in the Gulf of Mexico

Abstract

Barnacle genera Trypetesa and Megalasma are added to the faunal inventory of the Gulf of Mexico with the recent discovery of Trypetesa lampas (Hancock) and Megalasma gracile gracilius Pilsbry off the Florida coast. This is only the second reported occurrence of T. lampas in the Western Atlantic south of Massachusetts. Discovery of a third species, Balanus reticulatus Utinomi, documents the presence of this widely distributed shallow-water cirriped referred to earlier in unpublished literature. All species reported upon are members of tropical and north temperate Atlantic faunas.
