Abstract

The effects of coral zonation on reef fish distribution and abundance patterns were investigated by estimating and comparing the population densities of 32 common reef fishes at different sites in each of four broadly defined reef zones within a Bahamian coral reef environment. Community structure was found to be significantly more similar at different sites within than among zones. The population densities of all but one of the species investigated also showed significance among zone variability. These findings document a between habitat component to the high diversity of western Atlantic coral reef fish communities, and demonstrate that on the scale of the defined habitats, these communities have a characteristic structure.
