Abstract

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of Mn2+ ions revealed their distribution on different structural units of 2B2O3.CdO glass matrix doped with MnO. Distorted octahedral symmetric sites were detected. The progressive clustering of Mn2+ ions was evidenced when the MnO content increased. Magnetic measurements revealed both Mn2+ and Mn3+ valence states as simultaneously present in the vitreous matrix and the transition from isolated ions in samples with x≤3 mol% MnO to those involved in dipole–dipole interactions for samples with x<20 mol% and to antiferromagnetically coupled pairs when x≥20 mol%.
