Abstract
Over-specialisation is causing a widening split amongst branches in the engineering profession. Extended education programs could be made very effective in overcoming this trend by allowing for inter-disciplinary links which offer a broader basis for engineering. This could involve an introductory general degree built largely around science, and also humanities-based courses leading into an engineering program at the post-primary or secondary degree level. Proper coordination of such extended studies is necessary and must be considered together with the potential use of continuing education to complement and advance those studies later in an engineer's professional life.
