Abstract
Gender has figured prominently in the work of director Stanley Kwan, one of several male Hong Kong filmmakers (Tsui Hark and Ching Siu-tung are two others) whose consideration of women and sexuality in the 1980s and 1990s deconstructed the ways that cinema "naturalizes" masculine fantasies and ideologies.
