Abstract
The present commercial success of Mission Impossible 2 reads more like a triumph of that contemporary manifestation of what Thomas Schatz once referred to as the “genius of the system,” than anything else. Today, this genius loci may be more malignant in terms of the frequent lack of innovation allowed to directors on the set. The production history of Mission Impossible 2 (or MI-2 as its abbreviation goes) is revealing in this respect.
