Abstract

This paper concerns the notions of acoustic pressure and "instant" levels in environmental acoustics. These notions are cited in numerous papers, but sometimes with different definitions, and this may induce confuseness. This situation may be the result of a confusion between the physical values, that may vary quickly, and their image transforms at the end of an acquisition or measure instrument; and perhaps is there attention and language problems between these two notions. In this paper, we try to distinguish between these two aspects, and we explain the mathematic properties of the transformation of a signal by an instrument (convolution). We then discuss the properties and consequences of impulse responses convolution, the notion of temporal interval of acoustic signal integration, and exponential responses.
