Abstract

An FTIR method has been developed for quantitative analysis of the total branched chain ¯n methyl of ethylene/butyl acrylate/vinyl acetate tercopolymer. In this work, mixtures of atactic polypropylene and straight-chain alkane C 27 H 56 were chosen as model compounds and the 1378 cm -1 band of the methyl side group as the key band for determination of the number of branched chains of the tercopolymer. A calibration equation correlation coefficient of 0.995 was obtained as follows:n¯ methyl = 0.51 ( A 1376 / D · t ) - 1.02.¯n methyl of the tercopolymer can be determined by FTIR; the results are in agreement with those determined by 1 H NMR.
