Abstract

Professionalization of environmental services is possible and needed. Professionalization is possible since essential prerequisites for the development of an autonomous environmental profession are fulfilled. We show this for the example of the environmental services in Switzerland. Here we find an active professional association as well as an academic basis (Environmental Sciences at ETH). Professionalization is needed, particularly with respect to the ongoing European harmonization of the environmental market: At a European level, an environmental profession should participate in the discussion on how to define the environmental services; it should not completely leave this field to engineering associations.
