Abstract
Photonic crystals were prepared from monodisperse submicron-sized SiO2 spheres. The crystals were shown to have an fcc lattice. The principal types of defects and mechanisms of defect formation in the crystals were analyzed. Optical measurements revealed a minimum in transmission, attributable to the diffraction of light by the (111) planes of the fcc lattice.
