Abstract

In Thailand, about 80% of the total energy used is from conventional energy sources and almost half of the energy used is imported. Biomass energy is seen to be the most promising compared to other renewable energy sources. This paper aims to examine the past, present and future trends of the energy situation in the country. The roles of both the authorities and stakeholders in biomass development are presented. National initiatives undertaken on biomass energy development are briefly reviewed and analysed. Finally, current uses of biomass technologies, including barriers to the promotion of their commercial applications, are examined.
