Abstract

Existing data from the literature for the phase equilibria of the ternary system Cr- Fe-Ni and for the relevant binary systems Cr-Fe, Cr-Ni, and Fe-Ni have been assembled and reviewed. The material for the ternary system is presented in the form of projections for the liquidus and solidus and of recommended isothermal sections for solid-phase equilibria down to 550°C, together with tables of tie-lines (where known). Criteria for the selection of data from different sources include purity of materials, heat-treatment regimes, and other factors of known importance. The stability ranges of the solid phases α(bcc), γ(fcc), and σ(tetragonal) are indicated. Attention is drawn to the critical role of the sluggish σ-phase reactions in governing low-temperature phase changes. A brief summary is given of thermodynamic studies relevant to ternary phase equilibria.
