Abstract
A practical checking technique is developed for high precision GPS antennas. This technique is designed to check whether there are any unmodelled phase centre positional errors (i.e. gross phase centre residuals) of the high precision GPS antennas. The technique can also be used to detect whether an antenna is faulty. A Precision Plate consisting of three precisely measured points, distributed in an equilateral triangle, was developed for this purpose. To determine the value of the “gross” phase centre residual of the tested GPS antennas, a set of linear equations is formulated using the difference between the GPS measured values and the precisely measured values. The unknowns in the linear equations represent the gross phase centre residuals of the tested GPS antennas.A checking exercise using three Trimble 4000 series receivers and three Trimble compact L1/L2 geodetic dome antennas was carried out at the University of Otago. Results of this exercise show that the values of the residuals of the antennas are less 1 mm.
