Abstract

The seeds of Dendrocalamus membranaceus stored at different combinations of storage temperature (5, 15, 25, and 35°C) and seed moisture content (10.6, 7.1, and 5.3%) exhibited well defined trend of increasing mean viability period with the decreasing temperature and moisture content similar to orthodox seeds. The relationship between storage temperature, seed moisture content and mean viability period was quantified and provisional coefficients were estimated for the improved viability equation. The seed loses viability within few months under uncontrolled storage conditions but can safely be stored for around 45 years at ideal conditions of germplasm conservation as predicted according to viability equation.
