Abstract
The article, based on the findings of the third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), discusses the results of crossnational student achievement in science and mathematics among half a million students in 41 countries in Grade 4, 8 and 12. The article examines critically methodology, curricular issues, assessment and global politics of excellence, quality and standards in education.
