Abstract
The results obtained in the experiment of the preceding paper have been analyzed here. It has been found out that in the perception of logical stress it is essential to know the position of the second derivative maximum of the fundamental frequency contour in respect to the beginning of the word in a sentence. For the perception of a question in the sentence it is necessary that the frequency peak and the centre of the time interval with a higher pitch (i.e. the centre between the two minima of the second derivative of the frequency curve) be simultaneously present in the middle of the word. Rules have been provided for determining the perceptibility of emphasis and interrogation depending on the temporal characteristics of the pitch contour. The experiment with the control material showed that the rules can be applied to simple sentences that differ both in phonemic structure and in the position of word stress from the sentence on the basis of which the rules had been found. Nevertheless the expansion of the field for the use of these rules requires further investigation.
