Abstract
A procedure for calculating auditory roughness was developed on the basis of new as well as old psychoacoustic data. As a first step envelope-fluctuations of the excitation in 24 critical-bands are calculated. In the envelope-fluctuation-frequency domain extending from 20 Hz to 300 Hz, the partial roughness, i.e. roughness per critical band, are evaluated. The partial roughnesses are added after weighting by the correlation between envelope-fluctuations of adjacent critical bands. The weighting permits the calculation of the roughness of beats and modulated pure-tones as well as the roughness of modulated and unmodulated narrow band- and broadband-noise corresponding to psychoacoustic data.
