Abstract

We study the efficiency of excitation of low-frequency normal modes in low-mode-number acoustic waveguides by vertical arrays. It is found that matching the phase-amplitude distribution over the array aperture to the structure of the lower-order normal modes decreases the source energy loss related to the excitation of the relatively strongly-damped higher-order modes as well as continuous-spectrum modes in the vicinity of the source. It is shown that the level of the lower-order modes excited by a vertical array can be increased (as compared to the radiation of a single source) by increasing the array size and optimizing the array location taking into account verical structures of the radiated normal modes.
