Abstract

The behaviour of mild steel, in media containing sulphide ions was studied using consecutive potential sweeps and potentiostatic current transients. The influence of the anodic and cathodic limits of potential on the formation of uniform and passive films of sulphides, and on pit formation, was investigated. It was concluded that the pit formation is related to the existence of anodic processes that take place at potentials more noble than 200 mV (SCE), that are associated with cathodic processes occurring at potentials more cathodic than −1500 mV (SCE).
