Abstract
The distribution of cobalt between liquid Cu-Co alloys and Cu2O-CoO-SiO2 slags has been investigated for the conditions of varying amounts of cobalt in the alloy, change in composition of slag, different metal to oxide ratios and in the temperature range of 1473 to 1573 K. The equilibrium reaction considered wasCu2O (slag) + Co (alloy) = CoO (slag) + 2Cu (alloy). It was found that the solubility of cobalt in slag increased with: (a) decreasing temperature; (b) increasing the Cu2O/ SiO2 ratio; (c) increasing the amount of Co in the alloy; and (d) increasing the metal to oxide ratio. The distribution coefficient LCo = (% Co )/[%Co] as a function of temperature was calculated and following linear regression relationship was obtainedlog
