Abstract

In 1965, as Reuters Chief Correspondent in Germany, I was pleased to obtain the above post. After three months training in London, I began work in West Berlin, providing broadcast and written material for the German Service in German and news dispatches in English for the whole BBC. My sources included the Communist papers, western and Communist colleagues, contacts in East Berlin and East German visitors to our office. In my commentaries, directed mainly at East Germans, I attacked the killings on the Berlin Wall and reported on moves culminating in Brandt's Ostpolitik and the mutual recognition of the two Germanys.
