Abstract
The modern idea of the Mediterranean was introduced at the end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth century by writers such as Madame de Staël, Chateaubriand, and Lamartine. These writers were active participants in the political life of their time and in 'the journey to Orient' stylethey invented. The aim of this study is to illustrate the way in which they linked domains of thought, adding geography and tourism to create a new dimension, both virtual and real.
