Abstract
The construction of menopause as an estrogen deficiency condition originated primarily in the United States and is being exported to many other countries throughout the world. I have identified specific cultural assumptions and policies in the United States as well as the ubiquitous gender biases that have contributed to the medicalization of menopause. Since medicalized menopause is causing harm to women worldwide, it is imperative that it be addressed by the international community.
