Abstract

“Powerful Tools for Caregiving” is an education program for family caregivers of older adults. Based on a self-efficacy model, the program empowers family caregivers to reduce negative effects of caregiving and to practice self-care. Through a train-the-trainer approach, professional and community volunteers were trained as class leaders and master trainers. This enabled the Powerful Tools for Caregiving program to reach family caregivers in geographically dispersed regions and underserved communities. The program was evaluated using preclass, postclass, and 6-month follow-up surveys. Class participants rated the classes very positively, reported high use of the tools taught during the series, and showed significant improvements in self-efficacy, emotional well-being, and self-care behaviors.
