Abstract
Many neutron scatterers believe (or assume) that the total neutron scattering cross section of a sample (i.e., the cross section that is used to estimate quantities such as transmission, single and multiple scattering probabilities, and self-shielding) is equal to a sum of bound atom scattering cross sections, weighted according to the chemical composition of the sample. This may be acceptably close to the truth for many materials much of the time, but in general, it is not true and sometimes it is very far from the truth.
