Abstract
As the incoming chair of NuPECC, it is a great privilege to be asked to write this editorial, particularly because this special issue of Nuclear Physics News features the FAIR project. FAIR is an ambitious, exciting, and genuinely pan-European project that will deliver a world-leading radioactive beam facility. The level of involvement by the community is wonderful to see, with many hundreds of our colleagues working at an astonishing pace to define the experiments of the NUSTAR and PANDA collaborations. This commitment is not surprising, for the possibilities that FAIR offers for world-class research are enormous, as you will see from the articles in this issue.
