Abstract
A model is proposed for the ferroelectric phase transition in hexagonal ice I h . This model obeys the ice rule within a cluster approximation and includes long-range dipole-dipole interactions. The ferroelectric transition temperature, dielectric tensor, and anisotropy are calculated and compared with experiment. A ferroelectric transition is predicted at 73 K which agrees closely with the experimental results of Kawada. At higher temperatures the dielectric tensor and anisotropy agree with the experimental results obtained by Wörz and Cole.
